Water Saving Turf

Orange County is typically known for it's lush landscapes and it's ability to grow exotic plants and citrus.  This didn't used to be the case, as the weather was warm enough to grow nearly anything but there just wasn't enough water to get it done.  Technically, the area is almost a desert, but the invention of irrigation systems and sprinklers for your home allowed residents to grow nearly any type of plant they wanted in order to beautify their personal spaces.  Naturally, people started growing thick green lawns in order to provide a soft and secure place for families to lounge and play.  The automatic watering that came from sprinkler systems allowed for people to not be inconvenienced watering the lawn with a hose, and landscaping companies became big business taking care of the mowing and grooming of the yards.  The problems began to happen as water got more scarce and populations began to grow.

Orange County and most other areas in southern California are in a drought situation right now.  We have had several years straight of rainfall levels that have not replenished the water reserves to a level that we need in order to assure there will be enough drinking water for all residents.  When this happens, the county must impose watering restrictions on the residents in order to conserve water, and those restrictions generally involve not being able to water your lawn enough to keep it healthy.  They will also encourage you to remove your lawn and replace it with a ground covering that is more eco-friendly, and does not need continual watering in order to look good.  But what kind of ground covering looks as good as a lawn and does not need water?  The answer is artificial turf!

Fake grass does not look and feel the way it did in the seventies when the Houston Astros became the first team to play on it.  The synthetic products back then looked quite fake, and were hard to walk on.  They felt like a carpet of plastic was rolled out over a tile floor, and because of that association many people have a misunderstanding of the way artificial turf is today.  A professional installation of artificial turf in 2018 is soft and spongy due to the underfill materials that are used, and it is secure to the ground due to improved staking techniques.  The manufacturing process now can simulate grass so well that it is difficult to tell the difference between water saving turf and real grass, and the drainage problems were solved many years ago.

So this year, when you are faced with either replacing the grass that was damaged by the drought last year or allocating that money to something far smarter that will save you money and save water at the same time, why not ask about artificial turf.  Companies like Coastal Greenscapes specialize in the installation of beautiful synthetic grass in Anaheim and Orange County, and they can answer any questions you might have.  Their estimates are always free and they stand by all their work.  Eco-friendly grass is the way to go, are you going to be part of the future?
