Save Water In Southern California

There is a water shortage in southern California.  It might not seem like it when you can turn your faucet on and leave it running for as long as you want to, but we are in an extended period of drought conditions where the rainfall levels are not replenishing the reserves fast enough to compensate for all of our water use.  Of course, our citizens and animals need water to drink and there is no way to cut back on that necessity, but we do have ways of conserving that will help us to ensure that there is always enough water to keep us alive.  That way is by removing your existing sod and living plants in your landscaping and replacing them with xeriscaping or artificial turf.  Many people are unaware that your grass uses up to 55 gallons of water every year per square foot just to stay alive.  While this might not seem like a lot, when you consider that there are millions of square feet of grass in Anaheim, we are literally throwing water away that could be used for our drinking water.  So how can someone conserve water and participate in helping our community?

The easiest thing that you can do is to remove the living grass from your home and replace it with either artificial turf or another groundcovering that is not going to need water in order to look good.  Pavers and crushed rock are also excellent examples of ways to cover your yard with a great looking surface and still stay water smart.  Another way to keep from wasting water in your yard is to plan areas that are used in specific ways instead of simply having grass.  You can plan a play area or a dog run as an example of this.  You can also install a putting green or some other specific usage.  You can install a fireplace or a fire pit in order to create a gathering space that will be used by your family and not necessarily need grass in order for the space to feel good under your feet.

Installing water smart landscaping is going to help you improve your home while also helping to save water in our community.  It is the people of the community that make it what it is, so making sure that there is enough water for living things is our first priority.  Contact Coastal Greenscapes today to find out about artificial turf and xeriscaping for your home.
