Pet Runs Save Water

Water conservation in Southern California is critical at this point in time.  Water levels in reserves have been dropping to dangerous points consecutively over the last few years, and we have reached a level that can no longer assure all citizens that they or their pets will have access to clean drinking water at all times.  When this happens, it immediately triggers conservation actions on behalf of the communities, essentially making water waste illegal, and water saving the priority.  The restrictions on wasting water will be imposed or scaled back based upon the amount of water in reserve at any point, which basically means that you can never have an assurance that just because you managed to get through this year without your lawn dying that it will not have restrictions next year that cause it to suffer.  At this point, investment in living landscaping in the form of grass and plants in Southern California is ill advised and foolish.  You could invest a great deal of money into your landscaping only to find out a month from now that it is illegal to water it enough to keep it healthy.  A far better idea is the investment into landscaping elements that are considered "water smart."

Water smart landscaping is the use of elements that need little to no water in order to look good.  Some of these elements may be living plants that are found in the desert, which need almost no water to survive and can use natural rainfall without additional sprinklers.  Other elements need no water because they are not living plants, but instead are simulated.  Artificial turf is a perfect example of this, with blades of grass made from plastic and then adhered to a backing which gives the appearance of a lush and living lawn.  This material can be installed anywhere that the ground can be adequately prepared, and ultimately can serve as a perfect surface for many activities.

Many home owners in Southern California are choosing to invest their money into the creation of outdoor areas that do not use grass, but are perfect for specific activities.  This idea will encourage use of outdoor spaces while not involving the ongoing maintenance and care that is necessary for living grasses.  Play areas, golf courses and pet runs are great examples of how this can be accomplished to serve a specific purpose and yet conserve water at the same time.  The creation of a specific area within your yard for an activity encourages people to get out into the yard and use it.  This improves property values and makes the space more functional and enjoyable.  At the same time this will conserve water by not using real grass.  A pet run will typically be very hard on living grass due to constant pet movement, digging and burning it by urinating on it.  Artificial grass pet runs have none of these issues, and will ultimately beautify your home, provide a perfect space for your pet to get exercise, and conserve water all at the same time.
